As the name suggests musculoskeletal therapy (MST) relates to the treatment of muscles and joints of the body. It is a hands on manual therapy that focuses on the treatment and management of pain and dysfunction arising from the soft tissues, joints and nerves.
Orthopaedic testing, postural assessment, observation and assessment of range of motion are used to establish the cause.
Ultimately we attempt to find the true cause of the client's pain, rather than just treating the symptoms. MST possess the knowledge and skills to treat all manner of musculo-skeletal injuries including neck pain, headaches, back pain, sciatic pain, disc injuries, lateral epicondylitis, SIJ syndrome, plantar fascitis, nerve entrapment syndromes and much much more.
MST practitioners specialises in soft tissue therapy and use a variety of techniques including myofascial release, stretching, joint mobilisation, muscle engery techniques, positional release techniques, cupping therapy, dry needling, hydrotherapy, lymphatic drainage, taping and of course soft tissue massage. Because MST favours joint mobilisation and a 'soft tissue first' approach to treatment it makes it a gentle therapy. In addition to the 'hands on' element to treatment we also specialise in providing exercise and rehabilitation programs to help prevent re-injury and strengthen the body, this is also usually prescribed in conjunction with some basic nutritional advice to further aid healing.
MST practitioners have extensive knowledge of human pathology and disease processes which enables us to treat clients with various underlying health concerns including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, post-operative patients, heart conditions, as well as many other complaints. We are also trained to recognise systemic conditions that can create musculo-skeletal symptoms and can provide some basic assessment with the goal of referring the client on to a more appropriate practitioner.
