Why is urinary pH important?

Subtle changes to the pH of the body can have substantial impacts on a range of health conditions, including stress, bone density, pain, muscle mass and hormonal balance.

Urinary pH is a good measure of the 'acid-load' within the body, and our naturopath can use urinary pH to tailor treatment plans to correct any imbalances. Urinary pH ranges from 4.5 to 8.0 in extreme cases, and from 5.5 to 6.5 in the average patient.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that alkalising diets improve bone density and growth hormone concentrations in the blood, while acidic diets contribute to bone and muscle loss. The most nourishing alkalising foods are green foods such as leafy greens, green vegetables, spirulina and wheat grass; citrus fruits; raw nuts and seeds, cold-pressed olive oil, beans and legumes.

Increased acidity in the blood and other tissues can lead to a condition called acidosis. Diets high processed foods, meat, dairy, sugar, alcohol, and caffeine can produce excessive acidity. Signs and symptoms that may be seen in acidosis include headaches, confusion, feeling tired, tremors, sleepiness, acid reflux, nausea, numbness, tingling, elevated uric acid levels, arthritis to name a few.
